I'm Going to Scream

I've had it!!! All together my kids have brought home 10 fundraisers. Yes 10!! And while the Federal Government suggests raising our taxes, our State Government continues to cut education funding. HELP!!

Here is the list:

1. Discount cards for local businesses - $10 each and must sell 10 for the sports teams at the high school. Scott and Doug.
2. English Dart Bingo Tickets - $5 each and must sell $20 for the band to travel for competition. Scott and Doug.
3. Chicken Dinner Tickets - $8 each and must sell 10 for the band to travel. Scott and Doug.
4. Raffle Tickets - $2 each and must sell 20 for the soccer team - I don't know what for.... Thomas and Emily.
5. School fundraiser - all those catalogs where you can purchase lovely candles, gorgeous jewelry and delicious chocolates or gift wrap. Thomas and Emily.

Seriously?

I made the high school boys go out and sell to everyone they know. I bought the soccer tickets - how many more friends can I bug or rebug, right? I said "no" to the school fundraiser and Emily's been in tears every day over it this week. Kindergartners believe it's up to them to build the next playground. UGH!

And did you hear Alan Greenspan today? He now thinks it's a good idea to raise taxes. I'm glad the dems are losing the Primaries around the country. (Not that I think any Repbulican is brilliant right now).

OK , calm down, just venting......

Definitely scream worthy. Whoa.

I loathe fund raising. It's frustrating to me to see politicians toy with education. I feel like they use it as their poster child to defend any and all taxes. Of course people want good teachers and smaller class sizes and up-to-date technology and buildings that aren't going to crumble at our children's feet. They always cry that by passing certain tax cutting statutes or not passing levies, all we are doing is stealing from education but none of the many other government funded programs seem to get mentioned.

Good luck selling that stuff. At Riverview, they had one fundraiser early in the school year and it was a fun run and Jay and I just donated whatever goal the boys had ourselves so they didn't have to bug any of our friends or relatives. But...wow. You can only eat so many chicken dinners, right?

I couldn't agree more with your frustration. By the way, will you buy a raffle ticket from Andrew? He is raising money for diapers.

That is too much!

As a teacher I hated the type of fundraisers Emily's school is doing. Someone from the business always came in and did a really high pressure pitch to the kids (like buying a time share or something). I always felt like it was wrong and unsafe to encourage kids to go door to door selling things. And the worst part is that the school's get such a small percentage of the money, 20% was all we got! It is a lazy way to raise money and I feel like it exploits the kids.

I love the idea of a fun run. Do I dare volunteer to organize? Almost scream worthy as well.

No, I will not buy diapers and stay out of my neighborhood!! Actually our next door neighbor - the retired real estate mogul told Doug, "Not in these times deary." I did scream over that one!

Kris has written four checks in the last 24 hours. No joke. Soccer....choir....etc. etc. I feel for Emmy....because I remember Ty (being the last) wanting to do what the other kids did. But I had HAD it by then! However, I will say that people were extraordinary generous when Anne Marie was required to collect donations for India. The flip side, I guess!

Our school is doing a 5K this year. They also have presidential fitness races for the kids. And they are also having a pancake breakfast. I was thrilled with the idea. The races are 15 dollars/person or 50/family. Everyone gets a t-shirt. The distances are short 1/2 mile to 1 mile or so. The pancake breakfast is 20/family. My kids were really excited about doing the races. We couldn't do both the race and the breakfast so I had them choose and they chose the race and wanted me to run to. They were also asking for just donations if you can't attend and the school keeps at least 90% of the money! Great, right? Well, this week they brought home slips saying they'd only raised 20% of their goal amount. It almost sounded like people prefered the lame wrapping paper/chocolate gifts of the past. I was very disappointed.

Kelly,
That makes me laugh. I guess I won't volunteer to organize a fun run. They may hold me accountable and I'll have to pay the difference of ther "goal" and the "actual money raised".

That's interesting. Our school did t-shirts but only gave them to the kids and they had the school's logo on front and the various sponsors on back (Vaughn is usually one of them. from what I've heard, the school usually raises around $20,000 and it's all profit because they do it during school hours and need no volunteers (the teachers and the PE teacher are out there with the kids running) Of course, parents are welcome to come too and they do bring a sound system outside for music, but I think it's the easiest and least painful, in terms of time, cost and annoyance factor) to put on.

I don't know what our new school does, but if it's annoying, I am going to suggest this. I can't believe anyone would prefer buying overpriced cookie dough and wrapping paper!!!
