Book Review: The Marriage Bureau for Rich People

The Marriage Bureau for Rich People The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A light easy read about a man who has retired from his work but is driving both himself and his wife crazy by puttering around the house. Not sure what to do with himself, he decides to open a marriage bureau(match making business)on the front veranda of his home. What follows are stories of his own marriage, his son's passion and his assistant's desires. Mingled between these stories are the stories of clients looking for a mate for themselves or a family member. All of it interesting considering the caste and religious customs of India. My favorite thought in the book came from a Muslim wedding of one of his clients: "Your wives are a garment to you as you are a garment for them. The garment is worn next to our bodies; so should a husband and wife be. Just as a garment hides our nakedness and defects, so should the husband and wife keep each other's secrets from the rest of the world. Just as clothes provide comfort in inclement weather, a wife and husband should comfort each other against the trials of the world. Just as clothes add beauty and grace to our looks, so does a wife to her husband and a husband to his wife." I love a book with a happy ending and this one has several.
